Wooden Toy Soldier

Toy soldiers have been common collectibles for centuries, for both children and adults. The wooden toy soldier is one of the earliest known designs, as are those made from clay. These early examples were handcrafted, but these toys began being mass-produced during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

The wooden toy soldier largely disappeared during the 20th century; at least as far as the “toy” part was concerned. Soldiers made from metal were much easier and less expensive to produce, and as a result wood was abandoned for toy making. However, wood soldiers were still commonly sold, but primarily as decorative items such as the classic “nutcracker” design that is so common around the holiday season.

Towards the middle of the 20th century, the metal soldiers that had replaced the wooden toy soldier were themselves replaced by plastic. Plastic became the preferred material because it is extremely easy to mold, its very durable, and of course, it is exceptionally inexpensive. Modern toy soldiers are still made from plastic, in most cases, and are widely available through just about any toy store in the country.
