Traditional wood toys are the things that our grandparents played with. They were around long before plastics and mass-production changed the toy industry forever and could still easily entertain a child for hours a day and years to come. They are simple and often made of common household objects by the kids or their parents.

Traditional wood toys include items such as spinning tops that are powered with a string, a stick and cup that can catch a ball on a string, a sliding whistle and other simple musical instruments, or an animal on wheels that can be dragged around by a toddler. These simple toys required imagination to use which forced these kids to use their minds. These toys could almost be credited with creating what some call the greatest generation.

Building traditional wood toys can be a great project for children today. Kits for many of these simple playthings can be found in toy stores, but these toys can often be created from common household objects and a little bit of ingenuity. A few pieces of wood and length of string can be all that is needed to create a toys that can entertain a child for years to come, and give them the confidence to try building other new toys.
